Also known as Zahtar or Za’atar, it is a spice mixture containing ground sumac, toasted sesame seeds and „green herbs” (thyme, marjoram, oregano). Za’atar comes from Arab countries and is popular mainly in Morocco, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Armenia.
Za’atar is used to season meat and vegetables, or in combination with olive oil, it is used to marinate olives. Za’atar is spread on pita bread or flatbreads (flat bread – tortillas, Spanish bread, piadina). The flavor of the Za’atar mixture can be spicy, herbal, nutty or toasty.
